Biography

WilliamPetersen Jr., MD, is a fellowship-trained pediatric hematologist-oncologist. Heis the clinical director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology andthe Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowshipprogram. Dr. Petersen is an associate professor in the Division of PediatricHematology/Oncology and is board-certified in pediatrics.  He also servesas Associate Chief Medical Officer for the UVA Children’s Hospital.

A Virginia Beach native, Dr. Petersen completed hisundergraduate studies at the University of Virginia and earned his medicaldegree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He completed apediatrics residency at the University of Colorado in Denver, then returned toAtlanta to complete Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at EmoryUniversity/Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. After completing his fellowship,he received a certificate in Clinical and Translational Research from EmoryUniversity. He joined the UVA faculty in 2013.

Dr. Petersen is married with three children. He and hisfamily enjoy being outdoors together — hiking, biking, and exploring theCharlottesville area.
