Biography

Michelle Kisliuk, Associate Professor, received the doctorate in Performance Studies from New York University in 1991. Integrating theory and practice, she specializes in a performance approach to ethnographic writing and research, and in an ethnographic and critical approach to performing. Since 1986 she has researched the music, dance, daily life, socioesthetics, and cultural politics of forest people (BaAka) in the Central African Republic (http://www.afropop.org/6333/seize-the-dance-the-baaka-of-central-africa/), and has also written about urban music/dance and modernity in Bangui (the capital city). In addition, her work extends to the socioesthetics of jam sessions at bluegrass festivals in the United States. Her published essays have appeared in collections including Shadows in the Field (Oxford University Press), Teaching Performance Studies (University of Southern Illinois Press), Performing Ethnomusicology (University of California Press) and Music and Gender (University of Illinois Press). Her book, Seize the Dance! BaAka Musical Life and the Ethnography of Performance (Oxford University Press) won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Special Recognition Award. She has been a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow and a Laura Boulton Senior Fellow in Ethnomusicology. Her current research/writing project is a collection of theoretical essays and case studies that address the ongoing project of performance ethnography, focusing in particular on her recent research with the House of Israel community in Western Ghana. Along with her academic teaching in Music in Everyday Life and Field Research and Ethnography of Performance, she directs the UVA African Music and Dance Ensemble.

Explores the implicit cultural messages which circulate within our ever-changing daily soundtracks. This courses focuses our attention on music that we usually take for granted, getting us thinking about the depths of quotidian aesthetic experience.

MUEN 2690: African Music and Dance Ensemble Level 1

A practical, hands-on course focusing on several music/dance forms from West Africa (Ghana, Togo) and Central Africa (BaAka), with the intention of performing during and at the end of the semester. Traditions include drumming, dancing, and singing. Prerequisites: By audition. Concentration, practice, and faithful attendance are required. May be repeated for credit.

Explores music/dance performance in Africa through reading, hands-on workshops, discussion, and audio and video examples. The course covers both 'traditional' and 'popular' styles, through discussion and a performance lab. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.
MUEN 3690: African Music and Dance Ensemble Level 2
Credits: 2
Practical, hands-on course focusing on several music/dance forms from West Africa (Ghana, Togo) and Central Africa (BaAka pygmies). No previous experience with music or dance is necessary. Students seeking the co-requisite for MUSI 3090 should sign up for MUSI 3690. Prerequisite: Instructor permission by audition. May be repeated for credit.

MUEN 4690: African Music and Dance Ensemble Level 3

Third level of proficiency in several music/dance forms from West Africa (Ghana, Togo) and Central Africa (BaAka pygmies). Performances during and at the end of the semester. Students develop a leadership role and proficiency in drumming, dancing, singing. and in ensemble dynamics. Students seeking the co-requisite for MUSI 3090 should sign up for MUSI 3690. MUSI 7524: Field Research and Ethnography of Performance
Credits: 3
Working with and critiquing ideas about ethnography and performativity, students explore epistemological, ethical, and aesthetic issues as they relate to field research, and push the envelope of 'creative non-fiction' in the ethnographic realm through writing. A final essay as well as a final performance presentation are required. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.
